4th Year Students Anaesthesia Block - Simulation Module

The HPS represents the latest in the state of the art simulation technology to train medical personal at all levels. STAN makes use of sophisticated mathematical models of human physiology and pharmacology to automatically respond to user actions and interventions.

Students are shown how the dynamic coupling of the cardiovascular, pulmonary and pharmacological system in the physical embodiment of Stan allows for the complete characterization of an adult patient. Stan is connected to standard monitors used in the operating theatres and they function exactly as though ‘he’ is a real patient. One can see the chest moving, feel for a pulse and monitor CO2 coming out of his lungs. Stan’s lungs physically consume oxygen and produce CO2.

Module 1
On your first session you will be asked to identify and connect the various monitoring devices used in theatre. In addition you will have the opportunity to mask ventilate (using the air bag) and then intubate Stan.

Module 2
During this session you will be asked to randomly role play the duties of the medical(anaesthetic) team in the operating theatre environment. Stan will be given a complete anaesthetic procedure highlighting the 3 stages of aneasthesia as per your workbook.
