Equipment in the SMART Centre

METI Human Patient Simulator – version4 and version6 (more .....)

The Human Patient Simulator (HPS) is used by trainees by programming appropriately complex scenarios for that level. Several methodologies can be used to teach, including any combination of the following:

  • patient condition known or unknown to trainee
  • diagnosis and / or treatment
  • pauses for discussion or run in real time
  • equipment in-service, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting
  • teamwork and communication skills (medical content is irrelevant)
  • evaluation / testing (try until you pass, not one chance with a grade)

HPS systems are based on physiologic and pharmacologic modeling programs which create realistic patient responses automatically, based on user interventions.  The centre has two adult manikins.

Spinal Injection Simulator

is a valuable training and teaching aid allowing realistic demonstration and practice of all spinal injections. Spinal injection techniques include spinal anesthesia, spinal tap, epidural analgesia, caudal analgesia, sacral nerve block, and lumbar sympathetic block. Simulator may be used to demonstrate Post Dura Puncture Headache (PDPH) prevention. The L1 and L2 sections of the vertebral column are clearly visible. The functional portion of this injection model includes L3-L5 vertebrae, plus the sacrum and coccyx.

AIRTRAQ Optical Laryngoscope

the industry’s first disposable optical laryngoscope, is a visual guiding system for routine and complex airway use.  The high definition optical system provides a magnified view during laryngoscopic procedures.

Ready to use and easy to insert, the AIRTRAQ has a built-in anti-fog system and a light source.  AIRTRAQ laryngoscopes include adult, pediatric, and infant sizes, nasotracheal and double lumen tube configurations.  The AIRTRAQ DL facilitates double lumen endobronchial tube insertions and the AIRTRAQ NT, available in adult and pediatric sizes, is for use during nasal intubations using endotracheal tubes.

Additional AIRTRAQ applications
    •   Emergency settings
    •   Cervical spine immobilization
    •   Fiberscope, gastroscope guidance
    •   Tube exchange capabilities
    •   Vocal cord visualization
    •   Foreign body removal

Glidescope video intubation trainer
